Jose Luis Cavazos Jose Luis Cavazos passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in Laredo, Texas, at the age of 71. Jose Luis, known as “Joe” to family and friends, was born on January 21, 1941 in Laredo. He attended St. Joseph’s Academy, where he played football. He later attended the University of Texas and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. He moved to Port Arthur, TX, and worked for thirty years at Texaco (Star Enterprise). While in Port Arthur, he met and married the love of his life, Marilyn Lastrapes; they had three children: Alexandra, Dr. Rebeca, and Jose Luis, Jr. When he retired, he and his family moved back to Laredo. During his retirement, he was an agent with Cirro Energy. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Miguel Angel and Lilia Caballero de Cavazos and his uncles, Rosendo (Maria Teresa) Caballero, Roberto Caballero, Hector R. (Elia) Caballero and Rodrigo Caballero. He is survived by his wife and children; siblings, Dr. Miguel A. (Gail) Cavazos, Guillermo (Chacha) Cavazos, Maria Lilia (Carl) Barto, Eduardo (Manuelita) Cavazos, and Conchita (John) Hickey; his aunt, Rebeca Barrera; his uncles, Mario X. (Robbie) Caballero and Patricio (Olga) Caballero; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A rosary will be recited on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the Hillside Funeral Home Chapel. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. from Hillside Funeral Home to St. Patrick Catholic Church. A mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the family plot of the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. J.R. Garcia, Dr. Maria Regalado, Dr. Rafael Deliz, Dr. Eduardo Miranda, Dr. Manuel Jovel, Dr. Elsa Canales, Dr. Monte Allen, and the staffs of Doctors Hospital, Laredo Specialty Hospital and Healing Hands Home Health for caring for Joe these last two and a half years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Joe’s name to Laredo’s Sacred Heart Orphanage or to the Catholic school of your choice.
