Maria Santos Idrogo Piña

Maria Santos (Idrogo) Piña., 91, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and Christian departed this life September 28, 2015. She was born, April 14, 1924 to Ignacio Idrogo, Jr., and Rafaela Oviedo-Idrogo. Maria Santos Piña was a committed and loyal housewife of Gregorio for 60 years. She and her husband Gregorio were one of the original parishioners since Mother Cabrini was established as a mission of Holy Redeemer Church in 1948 under Bishop Garriga, and in 1958 as a parish under their first Pastor, Rev. Romanato (RIP). At the Mission of Mother Cabrini, she helped assist with the first building committee ministries in 1958. She was one of the original initiators of the Altar Society, Altar Society past President; a member of the Carmelite Third Order of San Agustin Church, Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Member, a Lector, known as the one who helped pick up the elderly to take them to church or any other church ministry gathering. Maria was also a member of the Laredo ISD PTA at Farias Elementary. She enjoyed courses in home economics, cake decorating and home décor. Maria is preceded in death by her husband, Gregorio Piña, Jr.; her parents, Ignacio Idrogo, Jr. & Rafaela Oviedo-Idrogo; her brother, Ignacio Idrogo, III; sisters, Herminia Idrogo, LeDuvina Idrogo-Glass; as well as by her sons, John, Guadalupe and Roberto “Bovy” Piña. She is survived by her sons Gregorio Piña III, Ph.D., (Lucy) & family of Edinburg, Texas, Mario J. Piña, (Irma) & family of Wimberly, Texas, Xavier Piña of Laredo, Gerardo “Jerry” Piña, (Dora Elsa) & family of Laredo, Rolando Piña of Laredo, Texas. She is also survived by her daughters, Edna P. Santos & family of Austin, Texas, Ma. Del Rosario P. Gonzáles (Joe Henry - RIP) & family of Austin, Texas, and Isabella Piña-Hinojosa, Ed.D., (Blas Daniel) & family of Denton, Texas. Maria Santos had 24 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. A rosary will be recited Friday, October 2, 2015 at 7 p.m. in the Hillside Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. from Hillside Funeral Home to Mother Cabrini Catholic Church where a Liturgy of the Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Interment will follow in the family plot at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. The Piña family extends their gratitude to her health care providers Dr. Alex Blanco and Dr. Carlos Cigarroa.
