Bertha P. Valdez

Bertha E. Peña de Valdez, 98, Nane, as she was affectionately called, entered into eternal rest August 7, 2017, surrounded by her devoted and loving family. She was born to the late Vicente G. Peña and Alicia González de Peña, on September 26, 1918. Bertha was the last of the remaining prominent Peña Gonzalez families of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas Mexico. Bertha was a charter member of the BEYPE Social Club, American Legion Post 59 Ladies Auxiliary, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and a devout catholic that attended Blessed Sacrament Church. Nane was a passionate music lover, a keen and astute player of bridge or canasta, never missing an opportunity to join in and complete the quorum; and she always looked forward to her frequent trips to Las Vegas with her daughters. Nane took great pleasure and was always delighted to host a gathering by welcoming family and friends alike during the holidays or special occasions to her home. She instilled in her children to be gracious hosts as well. Nane was always ready to help you out when in need. Her kindness, caring and joyful attitude for all will greatly be missed. Bertha is preceded in death by her husband, Higinio Valdez, Sr.; her sons, Higinio Valdez, Jr., and Eduardo Valdez; grandson, John David Zapata and great-granddaughter Alejandra Herrera; siblings; Angelina Peña Espinoza, Alicia Peña Rodriguez, Vicente G. Peña, Jr., Oscar F. Peña, and Antonio Peña; parents- in-law; Daniel M. and Hortensia Vidaurri Valdez, sisters and brothers in-law; Hortensia Valdez Speed, Daniel M. Valdez, Jr, Aurora Valdez Chamberlain and Bland Chamberlain. Mrs. Valdez is survived by her children, Bertha Alicia V. (Max) Zapata, Diana V. (Rudy) Laurel, and Roberto Luis (Cordelia L.) Valdez; Daughters-in-law; Marie Valle Valdez, and Sandra Valdez; grandchildren, Kelly V. (Ramiro) Herrera, Lissi Valdez, Higinio ( Marlene) Valdez, III, Max and Mark Zapata, Rudy (Erika) Laurel, Jr., Alberto and Daniel Laurel, Roberto L. (Janette) Valdez, Jr., Rochelle V. (Juan Manuel) Gonzalez, Denise V. (Samuel, Jr. ) Moreno, Eduardo (Joanne) Valdez, Jr., and Adriana V. (Mark) Zak. She is also survived by, 19 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, nephew Xavier Valdez Speed, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews from the Peña-González families from Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Tamps, Mexico. The Valdez family would like to acknowledge and thank the following for the efficient, excellent and compassionate care given to their mother: nephew Dr. Arturo Garza Gongora and staff, caretakers: Maxie Chavirra, Ali Sanchez and Toñita Flores; Dora Camero and Argelia Soto, for their unconditional love and affection; a very special thank you to her daughters Birdie and Diana who were at her side continuously. A visitation will begin on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Hillside Funeral Home Chapel. A rosary will commence at 7:00 p.m. Funeral procession will depart from the funeral home at 8:30 a.m. to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Rudy, Albert and Danny Laurel; Higinio Valdez, III, Roberto Luis Valdez, Jr., Eduardo Valdez, Jr., and Max and Marc Zapata. Honorary Pallbearers granddaughters: Kelly V. Herrera, Lissi Valdez, Rochelle V. Gonzalez, Denise V. Moreno and Adriana V. Zak.
