Alfonso C. del Barrio, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, in his beloved hometown of Laredo, Texas. Born on July 16, 1935, Alfonso's life was a tapestry woven with love, dedication, and community spirit. He embraced every moment with warmth and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
Alfonso was deeply involved in his community, dedicating his time and energy to the Optimist Club of Laredo, Consumer Credit of Laredo & of Texas, and Toastmasters. Through these organizations, he passionately worked to improve the lives of others. His unwavering commitment to service reflected a generous spirit that served as a guiding light for his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Alfonso’s deep devotion to his faith was evident in the way he lived and served. He faithfully shared his gifts as a lector at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and as an Eucharistic Minister at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, finding great purpose in serving God and his community with humility and love.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Alfonso A. del Barrio and Rebecca Perez, whose guidance shaped him into the man he became, as well as his dear brother, Fidel del Barrio. The legacy Alfonso leaves behind is one of love, perseverance, and a reminder that family is the heart of our existence.
Alfonso is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Ana Maria del Barrio, whose love and partnership brought joy and fulfillment to his life. He leaves behind his cherished children: Alfonso G. del Barrio, Mauricio J. del Barrio, Raul J. del Barrio, David (Rocio) del Barrio, Rafael (Irma) del Barrio, Ana Leticia (Kenneth) del Barrio-Rivera, and Rebecca (Paul) Hanks; siblings, Alfredo (Patricia) del Barrio, Arturo del Barrio, and Manuel (Maria) del Barrio; numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Each of them carries forward the values and lessons that Alfonso instilled in them, a testament to his enduring legacy.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Luis Benavides and his dedicated staff, the compassionate team at Nurses on Wheels Hospice, and Alfonso’s personal caregivers for their exceptional care, kindness, and unwavering support. Their compassion, professionalism, and genuine concern brought comfort and peace during a difficult time and will always be remembered with sincere appreciation.
In celebration of his life, a Rosary is scheduled to be held at Hillside Funerals & Cremations in Laredo on January 6, 2026, at 7:00 PM, followed by a visitation that will allow family and friends to gather and share their fondest memories from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A private cremation and burial of ashes will be held at a later date.
As we bid farewell to Alfonso C. del Barrio, we remember his exceptional spirit, the kindness he bestowed upon others, and the love that radiated from him. His legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
