Basilia Gamez

June 14, 1924 — April 25, 2025

Laredo, Texas

As I care for my patients today,

Be there with me, O Lord, I pray.

Make my words kind –

It means so much

And in my hands

Place Your healing touch.

Let Your love shine through

In all I do,

So those who are in need

May hear You, feel You,

See You in me.

Amen.

Miss Basilia Gamez, 100, was called home to the heavenly father on April 25, 2025, in Laredo, Texas. She was born on June 14, 1924, in Laredo, Texas. A proud daughter of Feliciano and Josefa Gamez, she was raised in this beautiful city, having been a product of the old Laredo public school education system. Being from a humble family, she would walk from their home on Saunders Street to Laredo High School, (currently, La Posada Hotel). Basilia graduated from Raymond and Tirza Martin in the early 1940’s, where she was a proud member of “La Banda del Animo”, she then furthered her studies by becoming a Registered Nurse, having begun her career at the Old Mercy Hospital in Downtown Laredo, then being transferred to the Mercy Regional Medical Center in Central Laredo. She retired after over 30 years of service.

Tia Chila, as her family would come to affectionately known her as, would recount the many wonderful stories of a much simpler life. Her ethics for both her profession and family, came down from her parents. She always dedicated her life to the caring for her father and mother, a true dame, she never married, as she considered her life’s mission to dedicate her time, talent, and effort to her family and profession.

A devout Roman Catholic, she was a lifetime member of San Luis Rey Catholic Church, she looked forward to attending mass with her family each Sunday, because afterwards, she knew that the family would go out to eat, celebrating the Lord’s day and family.

Tia Chila loved to shop, especially for her beloved perfume collections, as well as always attending the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association annual events, held throughout the city. She helped out at many schools, just like the Sister’s of Mercy taught her to give back in that noble profession.

A dedicated and responsible woman of faith, she cared for her parent’s, 6 brothers and 5 sisters, a blessing given by God.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Feliciano and Josefa Gamez: siblings: Pedro Tomas (Amelia+) Gamez, Agustina (Roman+) Lopez, Maria de La Paz Martinez twin to Jose Paz, (Juanita), Virginia (Enrique+) Martinez, Paula (Jose+) Lerma, Domingo (Eva+) Gamez, Feliciano Gamez Jr. and Adan (Esperanza+) Gamez.

Surviving her are her siblings: Agustin (Alicia +) Gamez, Eva (Eustolio +) Rossel; sister-in-law: Julia Gamez, and her confidant and beloved niece that she helped raised and cared for like a daughter, Eva Rossel (Richard) Rodriguez, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, having reached 6 generations.

The family will receive condolences on Sunday, May 4, 2025, from 5 to 9 pm, with a Rosary to be recited at 7 pm.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, May 5, 2025, departing the chapel at 8:30 am to San Luis Rey Catholic Church, for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9 am.

Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
