Guillermo Serna Jr.

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Guillermo Serna Jr., who entered into eternal rest on June 25, 2026, at the age of 52.

Guillermo was born in Laredo, Texas, and spent part of his early childhood in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, where he lived until the age of 10. In a story he often shared fondly, he remembered convincing his mother, Lilia V. Serna, that returning to Laredo would provide better educational opportunities for him and his siblings. That conversation became a defining moment in the family’s journey and shaped the course of his life.

He attended Martin High School, graduating in 1993. He later pursued higher education at Texas A&M University–Kingsville, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and completed a Master’s degree in the Science of Mathematics in 2005. His years at TAMUK reflected his strong commitment to learning, discipline, and academic excellence.

Guillermo married the love of his life, Claudia R. Serna, in 2013. Together, they built a life rooted in love, respect, and partnership. In 2018, their daughter, Marcela Serna, was born, and his life changed completely in the most beautiful way. He was known to be a deeply devoted father, finding immense joy and purpose in his role as a dad and treasuring every moment with his daughter.

His professional journey led him to Laredo College in 2007, where he served as a dedicated math instructor for nearly 20 years. He was respected for his patience, clarity, and genuine care for his students. His leadership and commitment led him to serve as chair of his department before returning to classroom teaching approximately three years ago, where he felt most fulfilled.

Above all, Guillermo will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, caring son, brother, and loyal friend. He loved his family deeply, and they were the center of his world. He lived with a positive spirit and often said, “I enjoy doing everything. No matter how hard it is, I always have a positive mindset and I make myself like whatever I do.”

He was preceded in death by his father, Guillermo Serna.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Claudia R. Serna; his cherished daughter, Marcela Serna; his mother, Lilia V. Serna; his siblings, Jose Ivan Serna and wife Sandra, Lilith and husband Eloy Vega, and Dalia Calderon; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, students, and colleagues who will forever cherish his memory.

Guillermo’s life was one of love, purpose, and dedication. His legacy lives on through his family, his students, and all those whose lives he touched with kindness and wisdom.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at Hillside Funerals & Cremations, 310 W. Hillside Rd., Laredo, Texas, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM.

Visitation will continue on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Hillside Funerals & Cremations beginning at 7:00 AM. A funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 9:45 AM to St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 102 W. Hillside Rd., Laredo, Texas, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at City of Laredo Cemetery, 3200 N Meadow Ave., Laredo, Texas.
