Listen to Obituary

Maria Antonia Ortiz, 95, was called by the Lord on August 3, 2026. She will be lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched throughout her life. She was a devout Catholic who prayed the rosary daily. Toñita was fiercely independent, strong willed, and very smart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Julia Ortiz; siblings, Maria O. Stahl and Gil (Elvira) Ortiz; nephew, Gil Ortiz Jr.; and niece, Rosie Ortiz. Left to cherish her memory are her siblings, Julia (Kurt) Hartzog and Juan L. (Luz Marina Delgado) Ortiz; nieces and nephews, Teresa (Rick Morales) Stahl, Anthony (Marta) Stahl, Richard Stahl, Carmela Ortiz Stowers, Jerry (Jerilee) Ortiz, Juan Carlos Ortiz, Veronica (Brent) White, Patricia (Martin) Puente, Hans Hartzog, Marissa Ortiz, and Juan "Chico" Ortiz; grandnieces and grandnephews; as well as numerous other relatives and friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with her.

She graduated from Martin High School in 1950 and from Laredo Junior College in 1954. She worked from an early age in various jobs, including maintaining the bookkeeping records for her father's painting business, Juan Ortiz Painting Contractor. She worked for many years at Mercy Hospital of Laredo's accounting department from where she retired in 1996. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church most of her life and later at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. She loved her family deeply and consistently prayed for everyone's well-being. Toñita enjoyed spending holidays, birthdays, and special events with her family and extended family in Laredo and always remembered and sent hand-written well wishes to all her family out-of-town. Maria Antonia, better known as Toñita, Tia Toña, Tia Toni, and Comadre, will be remembered for the love she shared with her family and for the lasting memories she leaves behind. Though she is no longer with us, her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
